There's a stupid myth out there..that you make your own luck.

... Well sometimes you don't..

And if you want the good to finally reach you, trying harder is almost never the answer...

I know, because I tried.

I gave it everything I had.

I gave it my BEST shot.

And it didn't work.

Because I played by the rules and I did everything right...

I Ended Up With Thirty Years Of Near Misses And One Sentence I Said Out Loud, "That's Just My Place", And I Hated It...

I hated it because I could remember when it began.

• Marseille. I was 8. My family lost our home and moved into two cramped rooms. I watched the coins counted into a saucer, and I watched the money run through careful fingers anyway.

Before that year there had been good years. After it, there weren't.

From 8 to 38 I tried everything. Extra shifts. Candles. A lottery ticket every week. My grandmother's Tarot de Marseille, laid out at night on the kitchen table.

Here is the strange part. The cards kept showing me good things on the way. They never arrived.

At 38 I stopped. For ten years I asked for nothing.

I had goals, dreams and aspirations...I wanted more out of life...

...and two cramped rooms, carried around inside me for forty years, wasn't going to work.

So I did what everyone else out there does in this situation.

I started looking for a way out.

I looked everywhere, for 30 years. Then, ten years after I had stopped looking, I found it.

I stumbled upon a temple above the city, where an old monk was talking to a handful of visitors. He had come down from the hills as a young man. He was telling them that karma is "a flow", and not a punishment.

This was a new idea to me. As I listened more and more, I found that the people he spoke about were just like me.

They also had decades of near misses behind them, and a drawer full of things that hadn't worked.

The only difference was they had stopped paying. He told me why, in one plain sentence.

He said it the way you'd tell someone the time.

"You have been paying a debt that isn't yours."

Then he explained. Your good things travel down your family line to reach you: the money, the lucky break, the phone call.

Far up that line, a debt was left unpaid.

He called it a Karmic Debt. Three things about it.

Then I flew home. And for the first time in years, I opened the mail the day it came. That's the order it happened in. The good came after the burn. Not before.

I still had to work it out. One person at a time. How to find the debt and the year for somebody who wasn't me.

Looking back, those first months back home were brutal.
